Perched on a hillside above the coastal town of Summerland, Coastal Calm is a ground-up, three-level residence conceived around expansive ocean views and a quiet, cohesive material palette. Overlooking the town, the coastline, and the Channel Islands beyond, the architecture responds to its steep terrain while creating a sense of openness, warmth, and tranquility.
The home is organized to maximize its southern exposure, with the main living level opening to sweeping 180-degree views stretching east to west along the Santa Barbara coastline. Above, the primary suite occupies the uppermost level, offering a more private retreat with an expansive ocean-facing deck and integrated green roof.
Materiality is deliberately restrained, establishing a seamless relationship between interior and exterior. Accoya wood defines the exterior siding, fascia, garage door, and architectural screening, creating a consistent rhythm and warmth throughout the building. Inside, white oak is carried through the flooring, stairs, wall paneling, and custom casework, complemented by softly textured limewashed walls. The repetition of natural materials creates a sense of continuity and calm across all three levels.
A dedicated surf grotto embraces the home's coastal setting, incorporating vertical wood screening, integrated surfboard storage, and an outdoor hot-water shower. This functional yet carefully considered space reflects the relaxed, everyday rituals of life along the California coast.
In collaboration with interior designer Steph Hunt of Flare Hunter, the interiors embrace a soft, neutral palette of natural textures, warm lighting, wool upholstery, and subtle leather accents. Furnishings and finishes are intentionally understated, allowing the architecture, materials, and surrounding landscape to take precedence.
The result is a contemporary coastal home that balances expansive views with intimate, grounded spaces—a quiet retreat for family life, deeply connected to the rhythms of Summerland and the Pacific Ocean.
